AI Writing Sounds Fake. How Do You Make It Sound Human?

Not every sentence needs to “empower” someone.

I asked an AI for a short introduction and got three hundred words. Every sentence flowed, yet together they didn’t say anything.

First, cut what you’d never say out loud

A simple test that works: read it aloud.

If you wouldn’t talk to a friend like that, don’t publish it like that.

  • Swap “drive exponential efficiency gains” for “it used to take half an hour; now it takes five minutes.”

  • Swap “build a content ecosystem” for what you actually do:

    • write it

    • post it

    • see if anyone replies

  • Don’t wrap up every paragraph. Once you’ve made your point, stop.

Plain words aren’t lazy words. Be specific, be honest, and that’s enough.

Show it something you wrote yourself

Telling it to “sound less like AI” isn’t enough. Let it see how you actually talk.[1]

  1. Paste something you really published.

  2. Say who this piece is for.

  3. Read the result yourself and cut anything you wouldn’t say.

A prompt to try

Rewrite the text below so it sounds like a friend talking.
Keep the facts. No catchy one-liners, and don’t invent experiences for me.
If a sentence adds nothing new, delete it.

George Orwell put it well in Politics and the English Language: never use a long word where a short one will do.

Which AI phrase can’t you stand?

Good to know · 3 formatting notes
  • The tool only changes formatting; it never rewrites or cuts your text. Footnotes are collected under “Notes” at the end, and extended syntax such as math is kept as text.
  • Code keeps its text and line breaks; check the indentation after pasting into X.
  • Pasting into X Articles loses HTML table structure, so the body has image placeholders instead. Download the table PNGs separately, upload them at the placeholders, then delete the placeholders.
  • Footnotes are collected under “Notes” at the end, with [1], [2] marking their places in the text.
  • Imported files can be UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252. Refreshing the page clears your text, so download it or keep a copy before you leave.

FAQ

Will all the formatting survive when pasted into X?

The final formatting of an X Article is decided by X’s editor, and tables are not pasted into X directly: they can be turned into editable paragraphs row by row, or downloaded as PNGs to upload separately where the body marks their place. Regular posts are output as plain text.

Can Markdown tables be kept?

Real tables are kept in the rich-text, HTML, image and Word outputs. For X Articles, tables become images or paragraphs grouped by row, so the text doesn’t run together after pasting.
